Hazelnuts are Native to Oregon

Hazelnuts are a native plant in Oregon. They have been managed by indigenous populations here since time immemorial. Their primary usage was to provide material for basketry. Later, they were cultivated for nuts as a nutritious food source.

Early Beginnings: The hazelnut industry in Oregon dates to the late 19th century when European settlers brought hazelnut varieties to the Willamette Valley. The region’s fertile soil and mild climate made it an ideal location for hazelnut cultivation. Check out historic Dorris Ranch here.

Organic Movement: The organic hazelnut movement in Oregon began to gain traction in the late 20th century as consumers became more interested in sustainable and organic farming practices. The Oregon Organic Hazelnut Collective, established to support and promote organic hazelnut farming, has been instrumental in this growth.

Current Status: Today, only 1% of Oregon’s hazelnuts are grown using organic practices. However, there is a growing interest in organic hazelnuts due to their environmental benefits and the increasing demand for organic products worldwide.

Prospects: The Oregon Organic Hazelnut Collective continues to work toward expanding the organic hazelnut industry by providing education, resources, and community support to farmers. Their vision is a thriving organic hazelnut industry that uses sustainable and organic farming practices that support environmental and human health.
